Hopefulness

Hope gives you that optimistic feeling and belief that outcomes will be positive:

“Walk on with Hope in your Heart, and you’ll never walk alone”
(Shah Bukh Khan)

“Keep your eyes on the sun and you will not see the shadows”
(Australian Aborigine Saying)

“Never give up. Expect only the best from life and take action to get it”
(Catherine Pulsifer)

The Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS)

The Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) was developed by Dr Aaron T. Beck and was developed for adults aged between 17-80 years of age and is a multiple choice test measuring three dimensions of hopelessness: Loss of motivation; feelings about the future and expectations. The respondent darkens a circle indicating True or False describing their attitude for the past week including today. There are 20 statements such as:

  • “I look forward to the future with hope and enthusiasm”;
  • “When things are going badly, I am helped by knowing that they cannot stay that way forever”
  • “The future seems vague and uncertain to me”

Dr Vicki routinely uses the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) with all of her clients as part of a comprehensive assessment.

Please see the “Statistical summary of the change in Beck scores between the start and finish of each Woodlands Trust group course for those gambler clients who finish the course and provide both initial and final Beck scores (All 2004 to 2011 Woodlands Trust group courses) by Mr Dave Saville,; Principal Biometrician. Note that Dr Vicki Fowler was the Consultant Therapist for all gambler clients in this period gaining effective results for hopelessness.
